  • This Great Blue Heron was aware of my presence, but attempted to remain motionless to avoid detection. These spectacular birds are amazingly capable fishermen.

  • In June of 2008, I observed this pair of female Common Mergansers cruising the surface of South Manistique Lake in Curtis, Michigan. Mergansers are strikingly beautiful ducks, but are far less commonly seen than Mallards. Like the Mallard, the male Common Merganser is totally different in appearance from the female.

  • Who would have expected to find Pelicans in Wisconsin? Actually, they establish a considerable colony, each year, and they seem to enjoy congregating just below the De Pere Dam on the Fox River. Having apparently achieved supremacy in today's game of "king of the hill", this Pelican now seems to be bored with what's going on. What an amazing yawn!!

  • A young loon cruises the surface of a Hubbard County Minnesota lake. Loons are some of the most fascinating birds, barely able to move on land, but amazingly graceful at diving and swimming.

  • As the chilly days of autumn arrive, gulls take advantage of the heat retained by the warm surfaces of the piers at Chaudoir's Dock, in Wisconsin's Door County.

  • On July 2, 2015, I went fishing on Green Bay. I tend to watch for the pelicans, as they are usually where the baitfish are, which, in turn, is where the walleyes are. It almost appeared, on this day, that this fellow was trying to turn the tables on me. As it turned out, neither of us knew where the fish were!
