  • These are the final images of my late father's forest home in northern Lower Michigan, as it existed on October 12, 2013, a little over a year after his passing. They are rather deliberately zoomed-out, and stark, but that is how the place felt to me on that final visit, so that is how I captured these images. Always a place of laughter and family activities, going back to the early 1970s, the place, while peaceful and beautiful on that day, emanated a shrieking silence, not unlike that which I experience when I view these images, now. This small collection of images is a final, physical remembrance of a place, only, and certainly not of the wonderful things that happened here, during the years of my parents' and grandparents' lives. It was important, though, to record these for my children, who, for now, haven't the emotional capacity to return here, and for my brothers ..... and for me.

  • The Lake Michigan shoreline provides endless opportunities for the nature photographer.

  • In late March, 2013, I decided to roam and explore some of my favorite fishing spots for signs of spring. The "Bon Voyage" sign at the outlet of Chaudoir's Dock in Door County Wisconsin is almost humorous in this image, as winter was still in full control, and Green Bay was completely frozen. It remained that way for nearly another month.

  • The State of Michigan has created a very nice facility at the Cut River Gorge, which includes this huge stairway. It's really tempting to go all the way to the bottom, but one must be certain of one's desire to go all the way back up (200 steps). The rather ubiquitous Upper Peninsula mosquitoes down in the gorge can really encourage you to keep moving on the way back up. I highly recommend insect repellant for this hike.

  • Another engineering masterpiece, the Cut River Bridge (as viewed from the south) has carried highway US-2 over the Cut River Gorge, and the Cut River, 147 feet below, since 1947. This is one of only two cantilevered deck truss bridges in Michigan, the other being the Mortimer E. Cooley bridge that carries highway M-55 over the Pine River in Manistee County where I lived for a number of years in the 70's. This bridge contains nearly 900 tons of steel.

  • This beautiful residence on the shore of Chain Lake, with its background of dense forest, seems like an ideal retirement location for any nature lover who isn't put off by the Upper Peninsula's challenging winter weather.

  • Another of the idyllic backwater ponds that lie upstream of Hodenpyl Dam near the town of Mesick, Michigan. Views such as this are just one of the reasons for the Manistee River's popularity with canoeists and kayakers.

  • Spirea bushes continue to provide amazing fall colors well after most other deciduous trees have given up their leaves for the year.
    2_IMG_0677cr2cs2HR.jpg
  • Another great story of re-purposing in the Upper Peninsula, and specifically Calumet, is that of the First Presbyterian Church, which opened in 1894. As the population of Calumet has dropped substantially after the copper boom, the congregations of many of the beautiful churches could no longer financially maintain their buildings. Some congregations consolidated; some largely disappeared. Not all of the old churches have been re-purposed, yet, but this beautiful old church now provides a home for the Calumet Art Center, which provides a learning environment for art, culture, and history for the people of the Keweenaw.

  • It's somewhat surprising to many that the Cut River, the force that created the Cut River Gorge, emerges from the forest as this rather diminutive little stream.
    GLNP_5DM2_13.07.01_02041cr2cs2HR.jpg
  • The stairway into the Cut River Gorge seems to descend without end, and the beautiful scenery encourages you to continue your descent until you're at the bottom.

  • On June 28, 2013, I set off on a rather unscripted journey through Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, dodging thunderstorms, and stopping at various points to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Michigan. Big cumulus clouds add much to the overall beauty and visual impact of Upper Peninsula wilderness settings. I captured several images along the shoreline near Naubinway.

  • This is one in a series of images of Green Bay that I captured on June 1, 2013 (and a couple from Fall 2012) from my boat. Green Bay is a decidedly industrial city, but its riverfront is becoming more and more attractive over time.

  • This image captures the Mackinac Bridge from Huron Street in Mackinaw City, Michigan, on a blustery day in early July, 2013. I just couldn't resist the temptation to frame up this shot with the American flag.

  • The swan seems to be enjoying his morning patrol around this placid Manistee River backwater pond.
    GLNP_40D_13.07.01_02056cr2cs2HR.jpg
  • Trees that grow at the water's edge often topple into the Manistee River's backwater bayous and ponds, especially when spring's high water softens the banks. This old tree contrasts rather starkly against the lush background foliage.

  • Nothing beats the simplicity of Violets and Pansies. While their blooms have none of the complexity of Dahlias, Peonies, or Roses, they're beautiful, just the same.
    IMG_5830cs2HR.jpg
  • An interesting texture is created in this horticultural image, which was achieved through a large lens opening that draws focus on the foreground foliage, and progressively defocuses the background. This is another example of an image that adds both interest and warmth to an interior space, particularly in the winter.

  • The Headlands Park, just west of Lower Peninsula town of Mackinaw City, lies just over the taller tree at the left. This image was captured from across the Straits of Mackinac, at a point just west of Point le Barbe in the Upper Peninsula. Westward travel, into the region at the far right of the image, leads to Wilderness State Park, one of the gems of the Michigan State Park system.
    GLNP_5DM2_13.07.01_02019cr2cs2HR.jpg
  • I live in awe of the Mackinac Bridge. As someone who has studied the complex endeavor that brought this amazing object into being, I am sometimes tempted to ponder the relevant matters of engineering, or construction, or economic impact, or the sheer magnificence of the human accomplishment. Mostly, though, I am fascinated by the graceful geometry and symmetry, and moved by an intangible sense of calm that is constant, whether on a summer day, or during the worst winter blizzard.
