  • This is another example of the selective focus technique, using the LensBaby Composer with a fairly wide aperture. The central, sharply focused bloom stands out, while the legion of additional blooms seem to stand in support in something of a dream state. I find the image to be rather peaceful and relaxing.

  • Nothing beats the simplicity of Violets and Pansies. While their blooms have none of the complexity of Dahlias, Peonies, or Roses, they're beautiful, just the same.

  • Sedums produce these very tiny and delicate blooms.

  • One of beautiful sights each spring is that of the blooming crabapple trees.
    IMG_5517cs2HR.jpg
  • This little bumblebee is very busy gathering nectar from the fresh sedum flowers.
    IMG_2929cs2HR.jpg
  • Spring is a beautiful season in the Midwest, with spectacular foliage and natural floral color. The crabapple blossoms contrast against a background of bright green foliage.

  • Captured in natural light, this baby robin has grown tired of waiting for a meal, and has decide to get cozy.

  • This little fellow, just out of the nest, was taking a break from the summer sun. He was also anticipating a visit from a parent, along with his next meal.

  • Hollyhocks produce simple, yet beautiful floral clusters on tall stalks starting in late June in Northeast Wisconsin. When planted close together, they form a wall of foliage and color.

  • Nothing signals the arrival of springtime better than the emergence of Tulips. This image was captured with a selective focus lens, which makes the flowers in the center of the image almost appear to be floating in three-dimensional space.
    IMG_5369cs2HR.jpg
  • Tulips come in a multitude of varieties. This is one of my favorite floral captures from the Spring of 2009.

  • A cluster of purple tulips stands in contrast to a lush green background at the Green Bay Botanical Garden.
    IMG_5453cs2HR.jpg
  • This selective focus image was taken at the Green Bay Botanical Garden. Although this is a still image, it almost suggests to the viewer a sense of motion, or flying over the grounds.

  • Hybrid Petunias in the Bordeaux color against a defocused Arbor Vitae background. Very pleasant texture.

  • This little robin waited a long time, but Mom showed up, eventually, with a meal. He is so excited that his wings are a blur!

  • The tea roses are truly breathtaking each summer at the Green Bay Botanical Garden. This is one of my favorite places to visit in all of the Midwest.

  • This beautiful stand of Hollyhocks provides a nice contrasting screen to the many other colorful flowers in the background.

  • This shot is probably not everyone's cup of tea. However, it does illustrate an extreme consequence of capturing floral images with my selective focus lens, also known as a LensBaby Composer. When using this lens, the larger the aperture, the more pronounced the selective focus effect. In this image, the lens was nearly wide-open.

  • Many varieties of Tree Roses bloom in May and June. I like to capture images of these with the incident light provided by the sun, instead of making any attempt to add further illumination. I prefer the shadows that are created within the bloom through this approach.

  • In this image, each individual "shoot" appears to be "popping" out a flower. There are many stems that have yet to bloom. As you may have guessed, these blooms actually open rather slowly.

  • Peonies are some of the most beautiful of the world's ornamental flowers. I have pleasant memories of Peonies blooming in the spring that go back to my childhood, as my mother and grandmother had many of them planted around their southern Michigan homes. In those memories, ants seem to be omnipresent, so I chose to include this image of a Northern Wisconsin Peony on the site, complete with ant. If you're interested, Peonies have a role in Greek mythology (I'll leave it to you to track that down at your convenience).

  • Peony blooms are very complex, and they take on a different appearance depending on the angle at which the sun strikes them. In this shot, the sun is nearly directly overhead, and some of the petals have taken on an almost purple, fluorescent quality.

  • In summer, the Green Bay Botanical Garden is simply breathtaking. Individual blooms are beautiful, to be sure, but there are many viewing angles where the layering of color and texture are striking.
