• Another engineering masterpiece, the Cut River Bridge (as viewed from the south) has carried highway US-2 over the Cut River Gorge, and the Cut River, 147 feet below, since 1947. This is one of only two cantilevered deck truss bridges in Michigan, the other being the Mortimer E. Cooley bridge that carries highway M-55 over the Pine River in Manistee County where I lived for a number of years in the 70's. This bridge contains nearly 900 tons of steel.

 • When I was a kid, Red Bridge, which carries Coates Highway over the Big Manistee River in Manistee County, Michigan, was actually "red". It was a bridge with character, having a red-painted, steel structure, and a deck made of hardwood planks that made impressive (i.e. - frightening) noises when driven on. More than 25 years ago, the old bridge was replaced with a new steel and concrete structure. Today, there's not a speck of red on it, but the name remains. So does the incredible beauty of the river. I captured this upstream-facing image while standing on the bridge's approach.

 • The Cut River Bridge (as viewed from the gorge) has carried highway US-2 over the Cut River Gorge, and the Cut River, since 1947. The bridge is both spectacular and complementary to the wilderness setting in which it was erected.

 • Even though I grew up in Michigan, and have viewed and driven over it countless times, I think I will never lose my sense of amazement concerning the five mile long Mackinac Bridge. Even setting aside the still nearly incomprehensible engineering feat that created it, I have long considered this bridge to be one of the most beautiful man-made creations in the world. I took this photograph in August, 2009, just shy of the Mighty Mac's 52nd service anniversary.

 • I live in awe of the Mackinac Bridge. As someone who has studied the complex endeavor that brought this amazing object into being, I am sometimes tempted to ponder the relevant matters of engineering, or construction, or economic impact, or the sheer magnificence of the human accomplishment. Mostly, though, I am fascinated by the graceful geometry and symmetry, and moved by an intangible sense of calm that is constant, whether on a summer day, or during the worst winter blizzard.

 • This view of the Claude Allouez Bridge was captured from the Bomier Street launch. This new bridge replaces an old, revered, and very mechanical appearing structure. It is a wonderful achievement, in my opinion, being highly functional, yet architecturally pleasing.

 • Michigan's Mackinac Bridge is illuminated by the early-morning autumn sun. In service for 60 years, the bridge is not only a tourism icon, but one of the truly beautiful engineering objects in the United States.

 • The Escanaba River flows through the ruins of several old railroad bridges on its way to Little Bay de Noc. These ruins provide a subtle hint of the significance of rail transport in the history of the area.

Today, the river provides an important access to Little Bay de Noc, which is a mecca for trophy walleye anglers. This image was captured from Escanaba's North Shore Fishing Complex; one of the premier fishing-oriented boat launching facilities in the Midwest.

 • Heavy, wet snow fell on February 17 & 18, 2009, in Northeast Wisconsin, creating an almost magical white coating on all of Mother Nature's creations. The footbridge in this image exhibits the tremendous beauty that always coincides with a new snowfall.

 • Crossing the new Claude Allouez Bridge in De Pere, Wisconsin, I was struck with these juxtaposed, vertical elements. The element in the foreground is one of the gateway pylons, at the west entrance to the bridge, completed in 2007. The element in the background is the steeple of St. Boniface Church, completed in 1882.

 • The Big Manistee River is a winding river, which folds back on itself over and over. Over time, the course of the river changes due to bank erosion, and the former course is often converted into an amazingly diverse wetland. This bayou, created by one of those "course-changes", has existed for as long as I can remember. It teems with every imaginable kind of aquatic and bird life. When I was a kid, in the 1960s, my family used to go fishing here. Such great memories!!

 • It's somewhat surprising to many that the Cut River, the force that created the Cut River Gorge, emerges from the forest as this rather diminutive little stream.

 • The State of Michigan has created a very nice facility at the Cut River Gorge, which includes this huge stairway. It's really tempting to go all the way to the bottom, but one must be certain of one's desire to go all the way back up (200 steps). The rather ubiquitous Upper Peninsula mosquitoes down in the gorge can really encourage you to keep moving on the way back up. I highly recommend insect repellant for this hike.
