• In the summer, the view from Copper Harbor's Harbor Haus Restaurant includes kayaks, sailboats, and an occasional ferry returning from Isle Royale. However, in March of 2014, the view is that of a very frozen Lake Superior, as far as the eye can see. In my opinion, this view is equally beautiful. However, the Harbor Haus' season opens in May, so lunch will have to wait.

• The early morning sun lights up the harbor of Copper Harbor on October 6, 2015. No trace of land is visible looking out into Lake Superior in this direction, as the nearest land is 90 miles away.

• While the Harbor Haus is a renowned eating establishment, with an amazing view of the harbor in summer, it closes for the season in early autumn, and the building must endure the winter onslaught at the top of the Keweenaw.

• On the morning of October 14, 2009, I visited Lac La Belle Michigan, just south of Copper Harbor, hoping to enjoy and photograph the beautiful fall colors.

Somewhat insensitive to my tour plans, Mother Nature, instead, treated me to an amazing snow storm.

Although the light was far from ideal for taking photos of the fall colors that morning, I found this view of the departing storm clouds, reflecting from the surface of Lac La Belle, to be spectacular.

• The Eagle Harbor Lighthouse was built in 1871, and is still in beautiful condition. It is maintained by the Keweenaw County Historical Society as a museum, and the light is still maintained, in the tower, by the US Coast Guard.

• Copper Harbor is a very small town, with an economy that is geared toward tourism. Many of the lodgings are open only during the spring and summer months, while others are open year round. The people here are always so friendly, which makes this place very endearing to me. This can be a very brutal place in the winter, as temperatures can fall to -40, gale force winds are a routine thing, and snow forecasts are usually issued in feet, not inches. I think it's awesome!
GL5D_15.10.06_0180HR.JPG
• This is the passage from Copper Harbor out into Lake Superior. Like everything else, it was frozen solid in mid-March of 2014.

• From the Brockway Mountain overlook, the little town of Copper Harbor is nestled between Lake Fanny Hooe and Lake Superior. In the distance lies a vast wilderness that remains undeveloped and accessible only to four-wheel-drive vehicles or ATVs.
GL5D_15.10.06_0116HR.JPG
• This is highway US-41 heading south and west out of Copper Harbor toward Lac La Belle. Back in Green Bay, this is a freeway with four lanes in each direction, but, here in the northern Keweenaw, it's 2 lanes, covered with snow and ice, and no shoulder. It's almost indescribably beautiful, here.

• What can I say ... if you leave your truck in one place in Copper Harbor for very long, strange things can happen.

• At Copper Harbor, which is as far north as you can go in Michigan (without going to Isle Royale, that is), many of the businesses are closed for winter. However, the Mariner North is always open, and has great food, lodging, and other nice things for weary, hungry explorers.

• Early morning light casts long shadows into the valley below Brockway Mountain. Looking to the west, Lake Upson (foreground), Lake Bailey (background, with island), and, eventually, Eagle Harbor come into view. Lake Upson is fully contained within the Lake Upson Sanctuary, a holding of the Michigan Nature Association.

• This is the beautiful and enormous Laurium Manor Inn. This amazing house was built in 1908 by Thomas Hoatson, a wealthy copper mine owner. It was your basic 45 room copper tycoon's private residence, with four floors, and 13000 square feet of living space, including the ballroom. It is a beautifully well preserved example of the architectural heritage of the Calumet & Laurium area. It is now a bed & breakfast, and is open all year.

• Everything in the Keweenaw has to be tough to survive. This little tree, growing out of solid rock, and displaying wounds from animal chewing, stands proud at The Mary Macdonald Preserve at Horseshoe Harbor.

• This is M-26 leading north and east out of Eagle River, toward Eagle Harbor. What a breathtaking view I experienced on that entire journey.

• This is the Victorian Hall bed & breakfast in Laurium. Needless to say, it's not open in the winter. It is a wonderful example of the Victorian architecture that characterizes a number of the mansions that were built in the early 1900s by copper industry moguls.

• St. Anne's Church was built in 1900 for the French Canadian Catholics living in what was an amazingly diverse population that had assembled in Calumet, Michigan, to participate in the copper mining industry. It is, in a word, magnificent. It is one of the multitude of churches in the Calumet and Laurium area. It was deconsecrated by the Catholic Church nearly 50 years ago, and for a long while, its future was in doubt. Thankfully, the building is now being provided the care it requires and deserves, and it lives on as the Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne's. This masterpiece of architectural heritage deserves a gallery all of its own (perhaps I'll pursue that in the near future).

• Autumn in the Keweenaw
GL5D_15.10.07_0333HR.JPG
• This image was captured on Mandan Road, in the wilderness east of Copper Harbor, Michigan. It's name is a bit misleading, as it is a non-maintained seasonal track, wide enough for a single truck. In the summer it's rough, in the spring, it's very muddy (you must have a winch), and in the winter, it's strictly for snowmobiles. It is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen.
GL5D_15.10.07_0433HR.JPG
• US-41, in Green Bay, is 10 lanes wide in places. US-41, here in Copper Harbor, is just a bit more relaxed.

• At Lac La Belle, it snows almost continuously from Thanksgiving until April. Because of its location, it almost really doesn't matter which way the wind is blowing, as the lake effect snow will still be there. The only exception was this winter, in which the completely frozen surface of Lake Superior eventually led to the cessation of most lake effect snow, as the water could no longer evaporate from the lake's surface. Just the same, this shot illustrates what happens if you neglect to run the snowblower for a couple of weeks in the Keweenaw.

• During the winter, white-tailed deer yard up in a densely forested area just east of the town of Eagle River. They're not the least bit shy when it comes to meandering right into the roadside park in town. This guy was not the least bit concerned about me and my truck, but was much more concerned with what was on the menu.

• This summer retreat on Lac La Belle in Michigan's Keweenaw peninsula is completely buried in snow.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4172cr2HR.JPG
• This pretty little two-story home on the shore of Lac La Belle is carrying quite a snow load. The late winter first floor view is now an 8 foot tall snow bank.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4170cr2HR.JPG
• This sturdy structure on the shore of Lac La Belle is the Lac La Belle Lodge and Bear Belly Bar and Grill. If you're in Lac La Belle and you need gasoline, groceries, lodging, a quick meal, or a beverage, this is the place to go. Seriously, this is the only place to go. If they don't have it, you probably don't need it. Given the early 70's vintage gas pumps, you won't be able to use your debit card at the pump. In all honesty, it's stuff like this, and the wonderful folks that live here, that I really find endearing about the Keweenaw.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4167cr2HR.JPG
• I took a photo of these mailboxes back in 2009. Now, in 2014, they're not only still here ... there's lots more of them.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4166cr2HR.JPG
• Lake Bailey is a very picturesque spot in any season.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4143cr2HR.JPG
• These white-tailed deer are so accustomed to the threat-free nature of the visitors to the Eagle River park that they remain calm and almost pose for photos.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4125cr2HR.JPG
• The Keweenaw is home to a variety of truly magnificent homes, apparently used only in summer. I cannot imagine, given a home of this quality, with such an amazing view of Lake Superior, not being there all the time.

• No, I'm not attempting to do an advertisement for Ram Trucks, here. I had walked ahead some distance, down this remote, seasonal road that runs parallel to the Cliff Range. Looking back, I was struck by the beauty, and the desolation of this place. To be honest, though, given that it was about 10 degrees, and that I was a two hour walk from anything at all, I was grateful that the truck was reliable on the trip.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4057cr2HR.JPG
• I love the look of fresh powder snow. This seasonal back country road follows a parallel path to the Keweenaw's Cliff Range. About 2.5 miles into the forest (just beyond the curve ahead), the snow plowing stops.

• Despite the relatively brutal winter of 2013-14 (which really has no impact on real Yoopers), Upper Peninsula humor appears to be alive and well. I'm not sure quite exactly what this bit of U.P. visual commentary is all about, but it occurs to me that it took nearly as much effort to get that dummy up there on this Calumet home as it would have to simply shovel the roof.
