• Voyageur Park is one of the truly splendid features of my home city of De Pere, Wisconsin. Here, there exists a variety of trees, each having a different schedule in terms of color change. This is always a perfect place to take a relaxing stroll, and is especially beautiful in the fall.

 • Somebody's got to go first when it comes to the fall color change. Often, the maples are the first to show their fall shades.

 • One of northwestern lower Michigan's treasures is the City of Charlevoix. I captured this image last fall from the splendid marina in downtown Charlevoix. There is such an array of architectural beauty in this city, including the famous Mushroom Houses that were built by Earl Young in the early 1900s. One of Mr. Young's creations is in the center of this photo.

 • Harbor Springs is a splendid little town on the shores of Lake Michigan. There is a rich architectural heritage to be enjoyed here. The town is particularly beautiful in the fall.

 • Copper Harbor is a very small town, with an economy that is geared toward tourism. Many of the lodgings are open only during the spring and summer months, while others are open year round. The people here are always so friendly, which makes this place very endearing to me. This can be a very brutal place in the winter, as temperatures can fall to -40, gale force winds are a routine thing, and snow forecasts are usually issued in feet, not inches. I think it's awesome!

 • Early morning clouds and haze obscure the the fall colors that surround Lake Fanny Hooe, in Copper Harbor, Michigan.

 • This shot was captured at the Grand Island Harbor Scenic Overlook. In addition to the pretty fall color, Murray Bay lies in the foreground, with Trout Bay and the huge Grand Island lies in the background. If only the sun had been out in full force!

 • Seems like the Moon wanted to get in on the fall colors thing last October.

 • The beauty and pristine nature of Schlatter Lake really cannot be shared through words or photographs. I was committed to reaching this place during my fall 2015 explore. It must be seen to be appreciated. This lake is nearly inaccessible to the public, despite being entirely surrounded by public lands or private preserves. It is completely unspoiled by human activity.

 • When the intensity of fall color reaches near-peak, Aspen forests really become quite beautiful.

Aspen trees seem to transition from bright green to bright yellow before their leaves drop for the year. As sunlight filters through the golden canopy, all things below are bathed in a most pleasant, amber glow.

This stand of trees in Upper Michigan's Menominee County provides an excellent example of the phenomenon.

 • Spirea bushes continue to provide amazing fall colors well after most other deciduous trees have given up their leaves for the year.

 • Susan Lake, near Charlevoix Michigan, is an idyllic setting, with only a modest amount of development. This lone canoeist and the beautiful tree provide no hint of the bustling city only a few miles to the west.

 • These are the final images of my late father's forest home in northern Lower Michigan, as it existed on October 12, 2013, a little over a year after his passing. They are rather deliberately zoomed-out, and stark, but that is how the place felt to me on that final visit, so that is how I captured these images. Always a place of laughter and family activities, going back to the early 1970s, the place, while peaceful and beautiful on that day, emanated a shrieking silence, not unlike that which I experience when I view these images, now. This small collection of images is a final, physical remembrance of a place, only, and certainly not of the wonderful things that happened here, during the years of my parents' and grandparents' lives. It was important, though, to record these for my children, who, for now, haven't the emotional capacity to return here, and for my brothers ..... and for me.

It was important, though, to record these for my children, who, for now, haven't the emotional capacity to return here, and for my brothers ..... and for me.
