  • While the northern portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula is heavily forested, and includes some genuine wilderness areas, it also contains some of the most beautiful agricultural settings in the state. This farm scene, captured in the rolling hills of Antrim County, is an excellent example.

  • All that remains of this old farm is the barn. There must be such history associated with this building. If only it could talk!!

  • Even though nature is usually my focus, I also love farm scenes. I find maturing corn fields, such as this one in northern Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, to be particularly beautiful.

  • A beautifully colored hillside provides the backdrop for this Emmet County horse farm.

  • While certainly not reflective of "nature", silos are everywhere in the Midwest. They're part of the scenery on every trip, photographic or otherwise. My penchant for photographing silos undoubtedly stems from having grown up on a farm. Whatever the cause, I cannot resist composing images that include them.

  • The John Deere Model 45 edible bean combine sits rusting amongst a collection of abandoned farm implements. I am drawn to these images, as I love agriculture nearly as much as I love nature, and I realize that each of these machines is part of a human story.

  • This purple martin house was built by my father, in the 60's, on our farm in southern Michigan. Dad had a lot of success with martins in those days, and hundreds of the birds resided with us each summer. This particular house remained in storage until the early 2000's, when it was raised at my brother's home in Mesick, MI. I don't know if any martins have ever stayed here, but, regardless, it serves to remind my brother and me of an earlier, simpler time.

  • I believe that American farmers, perhaps without realizing their creativity, are true artists. Rather than using brushes and paints, they use tractors and corn planters in the spring, and decorate the heartland with beautiful and richly tinted fields as harvest time nears. I never get tired of roaming around the farm lands of the Midwest during late summer and early autumn and enjoying sights such as this.
