  • In summer, the Green Bay Botanical Garden is simply breathtaking. Individual blooms are beautiful, to be sure, but there are many viewing angles where the layering of color and texture are striking.

  • On June 28, 2013, I set off on a rather unscripted journey through Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, dodging thunderstorms, and stopping at various points to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Michigan. Big cumulus clouds add much to the overall beauty and visual impact of Upper Peninsula wilderness settings. I captured several images along the shoreline near Naubinway.

  • No, I'm not attempting to do an advertisement for Ram Trucks, here. I had walked ahead some distance, down this remote, seasonal road that runs parallel to the Cliff Range. Looking back, I was struck by the beauty, and the desolation of this place. To be honest, though, given that it was about 10 degrees, and that I was a two hour walk from anything at all, I was grateful that the truck was reliable on the trip.

  • This building could use some paint, a bit of mortar work, and, ideally, a return of the symmetry of the facing of the first floor. Setting those issues aside, this early 1900s structure is a thing of beauty. What an awesome headquarters it would make for a small to midsize business.

  • One of northwestern lower Michigan's treasures is the City of Charlevoix. I captured this image last fall from the splendid marina in downtown Charlevoix. There is such an array of architectural beauty in this city, including the famous Mushroom Houses that were built by Earl Young in the early 1900s. One of Mr. Young's creations is in the center of this photo.

  • One example of the many beautiful Upper Peninsula homes. So many of these houses, which were built in the early 1900s, are still in place, and receiving wonderful care from their owners.

  • The extraordinary winter of 2013-2014 provided us with an amazing bit of natural artistry, as water, leaching through the porous sandstone cliffs of Grand Island, froze to create the Grand Island Ice Caves. I captured these images on March 13, 2014, after walking across frozen Lake Superior from the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore headquarters. Because of the very harsh lighting during my visit, I elected to record many of the images in black and white.

  • Another of Calumet's beautiful buildings is the Oak Street Inn. Although it originally housed a tavern and grocery store on it's lower level, it lives on as a large group lodging facility with three huge private suites. The front of this building is beautiful, with styling touches similar to those of many of Calumet's old commercial buildings. This is a terrific example of how Calumet's new business community is investing in the area's architectural legacy while creating new economic activity in the town.

  • This is the beautiful and enormous Laurium Manor Inn. This amazing house was built in 1908 by Thomas Hoatson, a wealthy copper mine owner. It was your basic 45 room copper tycoon's private residence, with four floors, and 13000 square feet of living space, including the ballroom. It is a beautifully well preserved example of the architectural heritage of the Calumet & Laurium area. It is now a bed & breakfast, and is open all year.

  • Another great story of re-purposing in the Upper Peninsula, and specifically Calumet, is that of the First Presbyterian Church, which opened in 1894. As the population of Calumet has dropped substantially after the copper boom, the congregations of many of the beautiful churches could no longer financially maintain their buildings. Some congregations consolidated; some largely disappeared. Not all of the old churches have been re-purposed, yet, but this beautiful old church now provides a home for the Calumet Art Center, which provides a learning environment for art, culture, and history for the people of the Keweenaw.

  • This is highway US-41 heading south and west out of Copper Harbor toward Lac La Belle. Back in Green Bay, this is a freeway with four lanes in each direction, but, here in the northern Keweenaw, it's 2 lanes, covered with snow and ice, and no shoulder. It's almost indescribably beautiful, here.

  • These are the final images of my late father's forest home in northern Lower Michigan, as it existed on October 12, 2013, a little over a year after his passing. They are rather deliberately zoomed-out, and stark, but that is how the place felt to me on that final visit, so that is how I captured these images. Always a place of laughter and family activities, going back to the early 1970s, the place, while peaceful and beautiful on that day, emanated a shrieking silence, not unlike that which I experience when I view these images, now. This small collection of images is a final, physical remembrance of a place, only, and certainly not of the wonderful things that happened here, during the years of my parents' and grandparents' lives. It was important, though, to record these for my children, who, for now, haven't the emotional capacity to return here, and for my brothers ..... and for me.

  • Another beautiful building in Crystal Falls is the Forest Park School.

  • In the summer, the view from Copper Harbor's Harbor Haus Restaurant includes kayaks, sailboats, and an occasional ferry returning from Isle Royale. However, in March of 2014, the view is that of a very frozen Lake Superior, as far as the eye can see. In my opinion, this view is equally beautiful. However, the Harbor Haus' season opens in May, so lunch will have to wait.

  • Built between 1903 and 1908, at a cost of $100,000, this beautiful structure started out as St. Joseph's Catholic Church, which served the Slovenian Catholic congregation of Calumet. As the population of Calumet collapsed, the four congregations of Calumet consolidated into one, making this building their church, and renaming it St. Paul the Apostle Church.

  • Still in use, the Christ Episcopal Church is one of the original churches of Calumet, Michigan. This very simple, yet elegant structure was built in 1893 and, in my opinion, remains quite beautiful to this wintry day.

  • This is a road photo of highway US-41, heading into the town of Phoenix, Michigan. Phoenix is comprised of a few houses, a bar, and a church, but it is a very beautiful place, indeed.

  • Copper City, like Calumet and Laurium, has beautiful, and well preserved old frame houses. I would love to have a home with a front porch like this one.

• Harbor Springs is a splendid little town on the shores of Lake Michigan. There is a rich architectural heritage to be enjoyed here. The town is particularly beautiful in the fall.
