  • A tavern patron in Crystal Falls, Michigan, has parked his vehicle in an ordinary parallel parking space, where you might expect to find cars, pickups, or snowmobiles. Perhaps his need to get to the pub was urgent, and the John Deere wouldn't start....

  • This little enclosure is the focal point of the Kaleva Village Park, where the annual Kaleva Days festival is held. It was well-built, and, with the exception of the same shingle problem that effects the Lutheran church, it' holding up nicely. I used to hang out in this park, years ago, with some very fine people that I haven't seen in ages. Good memories!! If only these trees could talk!

  • Voyageur Park is one of the truly splendid features of my home city of De Pere, Wisconsin. Here, there exists a variety of trees, each having a different schedule in terms of color change. This is always a perfect place to take a relaxing stroll, and is especially beautiful in the fall.

  • Fishing is a beloved pastime for many people, myself included. In the spring, when the walleyes migrate into the Fox River from Green Bay, kids from 8 to 80, including this gentleman, line up along the shoreline at Voyageur Park in De Pere, in hopes of catching a trophy.

  • The Headlands Park, just west of Lower Peninsula town of Mackinaw City, lies just over the taller tree at the left. This image was captured from across the Straits of Mackinac, at a point just west of Point le Barbe in the Upper Peninsula. Westward travel, into the region at the far right of the image, leads to Wilderness State Park, one of the gems of the Michigan State Park system.

  • This is one in a series of images of Green Bay that I captured on June 1, 2013 (and a couple from Fall 2012) from my boat. Green Bay is a decidedly industrial city, but its riverfront is becoming more and more attractive over time.

  • One of the most breathtaking vistas that I have experienced is that of Horseshoe Island, when viewed from the bluffs just east of Nicolet Bay in Door County Wisconsin's Peninsula State Park.

  • The Niagara Escarpment, a geological formation that runs westward from New York State, through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois, is visible when looking south from the shoreline at Tennison Bay in Door County Wisconsin's Peninsula State Park.

  • This image captures the Mackinac Bridge from Huron Street in Mackinaw City, Michigan, on a blustery day in early July, 2013. I just couldn't resist the temptation to frame up this shot with the American flag.

  • For a kid, you just can't beat bobber fishing on a hot summer afternoon. For me, the innocence captured within this image is very powerful.

  • One of the many beautiful Calumet/Laurium homes, nestled in a deep blanket of snow. With street parking being out of the question in Calumet during the winter, people create "parking nooks" wherever they can.

  • The primary means of getting from place to place in the Keweenaw during winter is the snowmobile. During my two nights in Calumet, there were far greater numbers of snowmobiles in the area parking lots than cars and trucks.

  • Another beautiful building in Crystal Falls is the Forest Park School.

  • I live in awe of the Mackinac Bridge. As someone who has studied the complex endeavor that brought this amazing object into being, I am sometimes tempted to ponder the relevant matters of engineering, or construction, or economic impact, or the sheer magnificence of the human accomplishment. Mostly, though, I am fascinated by the graceful geometry and symmetry, and moved by an intangible sense of calm that is constant, whether on a summer day, or during the worst winter blizzard.

  • The Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is vast and pristine. It contains one of the last stands of old growth forest in Michigan. Photographs simply cannot do justice to the beauty and immensity of this park.

  • During the winter, white-tailed deer yard up in a densely forested area just east of the town of Eagle River. They're not the least bit shy when it comes to meandering right into the roadside park in town. This guy was not the least bit concerned about me and my truck, but was much more concerned with what was on the menu.

  • These white-tailed deer are so accustomed to the threat-free nature of the visitors to the Eagle River park that they remain calm and almost pose for photos.

  • In this idyllic setting, white-tailed deer mill about in an Eagle River picnic spot. It seems that this location has become that one special place where the locals bring food to the deer. While I was parked here, observing the deer, a constant parade of local vehicles drove up, tossed out vegetables and fruit, and drove on. Given the snow depth, this may be the key to the deer's survival.
