  • This is the entry arch to the swimming beach on Lake Superior in Marquette County along M-28. Even though I captured this image on March 13, Lake Superior is frozen as far as the eye can see in this record-setting, brutally cold winter.

  • On my way back from the UP, I decided to stop and capture this image of the Dickinson County Courthouse, which is another of those beautiful and well-preserved examples of Upper Peninsula architecture.

  • The Headlands Park, just west of Lower Peninsula town of Mackinaw City, lies just over the taller tree at the left. This image was captured from across the Straits of Mackinac, at a point just west of Point le Barbe in the Upper Peninsula. Westward travel, into the region at the far right of the image, leads to Wilderness State Park, one of the gems of the Michigan State Park system.

  • An interesting texture is created in this horticultural image, which was achieved through a large lens opening that draws focus on the foreground foliage, and progressively defocuses the background. This is another example of an image that adds both interest and warmth to an interior space, particularly in the winter.

  • Green Bay remains completely frozen on March 17, 2013. This image captures the harsh conditions at Brown County's Bayshore Park. Winter weather extended into May in 2013.

  • The self-unloading lake freighter Saginaw approaches the shipping terminal at Brevort Sand Products Corporation at Brevort, Michigan. This image was captured from the beach where the Cut River arrives at Lake Michigan.
    GLNP_40D_13.07.01_02082cr2cs2HR.jpg
  • This image captures the Mackinac Bridge from Huron Street in Mackinaw City, Michigan, on a blustery day in early July, 2013. I just couldn't resist the temptation to frame up this shot with the American flag.

  • One in a series of image captures from Spring 2010 of the beautiful blooms that make the Green Bay Botanical Garden one of the premier gardens in the Midwest.

  • A selective focus image of a blue spruce tree contrasted against colorful maple leaves. Certain Lensbaby images, like this one, seem almost three dimensional.
    GL5DM2_13.10.09_3155cr2HR.JPG
  • In late March, 2013, I decided to roam and explore some of my favorite fishing spots for signs of spring. The "Bon Voyage" sign at the outlet of Chaudoir's Dock in Door County Wisconsin is almost humorous in this image, as winter was still in full control, and Green Bay was completely frozen. It remained that way for nearly another month.

  • Green Bay remains completely frozen on March 17, 2013. This image captures the harsh conditions at Brown County's Bayshore Park, including the impassible road through the Niagara Escarpment down to Lake Michigan.

  • The Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge carries I-73 over the Fox River in downtown Green Bay Wisconsin. On this bright spring day in May of 2014, it also provided me with an interesting geometric element in this image that I captured from my boat on the Fox.

  • This is a sepia-tone panoramic image that I created from a Munising cliff side view of Grand Island and the old East Channel Light. This can be a desolate place in the heart of winter.
    GL5DM2_14.03.13_3748cr2HR.JPG
  • Perhaps the most photographed lighthouse in all of Michigan, the Grand Island East Channel Light is a study in simplicity. It hasn't been used as aid to navigation since the early 1900's, but it is a symbol of the state, of the Upper Peninsula, of Munising, and a regular itinerary item on the various boat trips to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in summer. I captured this image of the lighthouse from the ice during a brief snow squall, resulting in the ghostly appearance of Munising in the background.
    GL40D_14.03.13_4240cr2HR.JPG
  • This old woodshed is the focal point of this rather day-dreamy, selective-focus image.
    GL5DM2_13.10.10_3238cr2HR.JPG
  • Glengary Hill, just north of Mesick, Michigan, was ablaze with color in October 2013. In this image, you can see the mullein stalks in the foreground meadow that have reached the end of their life cycle.

  • In an image so reminiscent of sea ice photos taken from Alaskan shores, you can see the amazing extent of Lake Superior's freeze-up in the winter of 2013-14. The ice extends from the shoreline at Eagle River to the horizon. As I write this caption, I have just heard of the woes of the fleet of Coast Guard icebreakers that have been struggling to break this ice up for the start of the 2014 Great Lakes shipping season.

  • Just guessing ... this image suggests that the owner may have had his fill of shoveling.

  • One of northwestern lower Michigan's treasures is the City of Charlevoix. I captured this image last fall from the splendid marina in downtown Charlevoix. There is such an array of architectural beauty in this city, including the famous Mushroom Houses that were built by Earl Young in the early 1900s. One of Mr. Young's creations is in the center of this photo.
    GL5DM2_13.10.14_3422cr2HR.JPG
  • Sometimes, the most fascinating sights end up being right under your nose. I find that to be the case with each year's new growth on any given Spruce bough. I enjoy the effect that the selective focus lens imparts to image captures of these pristine needles.

  • The extraordinary winter of 2013-2014 provided us with an amazing bit of natural artistry, as water, leaching through the porous sandstone cliffs of Grand Island, froze to create the Grand Island Ice Caves. I captured these images on March 13, 2014, after walking across frozen Lake Superior from the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore headquarters. Because of the very harsh lighting during my visit, I elected to record many of the images in black and white.

  • On June 28, 2013, I set off on a rather unscripted journey through Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, dodging thunderstorms, and stopping at various points to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Michigan. Big cumulus clouds add much to the overall beauty and visual impact of Upper Peninsula wilderness settings. I captured several images along the shoreline near Naubinway.

  • This is one in a series of images of Green Bay that I captured on June 1, 2013 (and a couple from Fall 2012) from my boat. Green Bay is a decidedly industrial city, but its riverfront is becoming more and more attractive over time.
