• While the Harbor Haus is a renowned eating establishment, with an amazing view of the harbor in summer, it closes for the season in early autumn, and the building must endure the winter onslaught at the top of the Keweenaw.

• The winter of 2008-09 was equally challenging for raptors and foraging animals. This Cooper's Hawk blends so very well with the bare maple tree. Remaining motionless enables this formidable hunter to avoid detection, as he waits for a careless rabbit, squirrel, or mourning dove to enter his field of vision.

• This is the Victorian Hall bed & breakfast in Laurium. Needless to say, it's not open in the winter. It is a wonderful example of the Victorian architecture that characterizes a number of the mansions that were built in the early 1900s by copper industry moguls.

• The primary means of getting from place to place in the Keweenaw during winter is the snowmobile. During my two nights in Calumet, there were far greater numbers of snowmobiles in the area parking lots than cars and trucks.

• This pretty Munising home provides a look at the basic winter accoutrements for an Upper Peninsula family. These include his-and-hers snowshoes, his-and-hers snow shovels, an extension ladder for climbing up on the roof (which must be shoveled), and the barely visible snowmobile (at right) for retrieving things from the market.

• The extraordinary winter of 2013-2014 provided us with an amazing bit of natural artistry, as water, leaching through the porous sandstone cliffs of Grand Island, froze to create the Grand Island Ice Caves. I captured these images on March 13, 2014, after walking across frozen Lake Superior from the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore headquarters. Because of the very harsh lighting during my visit, I elected to record many of the images in black and white.

• This is highway US-41 heading south and west out of Copper Harbor toward Lac La Belle. Back in Green Bay, this is a freeway with four lanes in each direction, but, here in the northern Keweenaw, it's 2 lanes, covered with snow and ice, and no shoulder. It's almost indescribably beautiful, here.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4164cr2HR.JPG
• Green Bay remains completely frozen on March 17, 2013. This image captures the harsh conditions at Brown County's Bayshore Park. Winter weather extended into May in 2013.

• This is M-26 leading north and east out of Eagle River, toward Eagle Harbor. What a breathtaking view I experienced on that entire journey.

• No, I'm not attempting to do an advertisement for Ram Trucks, here. I had walked ahead some distance, down this remote, seasonal road that runs parallel to the Cliff Range. Looking back, I was struck by the beauty, and the desolation of this place. To be honest, though, given that it was about 10 degrees, and that I was a two hour walk from anything at all, I was grateful that the truck was reliable on the trip.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4057cr2HR.JPG
• Some businesses must remain fully functional in all weather conditions. This Calumet funeral home has an impeccably clean front walk, despite the 7' snow banks that completely obscure its first floor windows.

• Heading back into Wisconsin on my return from the Keweenaw in 2014, I stopped in Niagara, Wisconsin, to capture this shot of the Niagara Cliffs, which stand along side a very frozen Menominee River.

• Lots of activity could be seen at the Mount Bohemia ski resort during my visit to the Lac La Belle area.

• This summer retreat on Lac La Belle in Michigan's Keweenaw peninsula is completely buried in snow.

• I took a photo of these mailboxes back in 2009. Now, in 2014, they're not only still here ... there's lots more of them.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4166cr2HR.JPG
• What can I say ... if you leave your truck in one place in Copper Harbor for very long, strange things can happen.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4144cr2HR.JPG
• The Keweenaw is home to a variety of truly magnificent homes, apparently used only in summer. I cannot imagine, given a home of this quality, with such an amazing view of Lake Superior, not being there all the time.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4106cr2HR.JPG
• This is a road photo of highway US-41, heading into the town of Phoenix, Michigan. Phoenix is comprised of a few houses, a bar, and a church, but it is a very beautiful place, indeed.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4103cr2HR.JPG
• That's more than 23 feet of snow so far this year.
GL5DM2_14.03.15_4033cr2HR.JPG
• This is the beautiful and enormous Laurium Manor Inn. This amazing house was built in 1908 by Thomas Hoatson, a wealthy copper mine owner. It was your basic 45 room copper tycoon's private residence, with four floors, and 13000 square feet of living space, including the ballroom. It is a beautifully well preserved example of the architectural heritage of the Calumet & Laurium area. It is now a bed & breakfast, and is open all year.

GL5DM2_14.03.14_3914cr2HR.JPG
• Rental cabins are available all year in the Keweenaw.

• On the morning of October 14, 2009, I visited Lac La Belle Michigan, just south of Copper Harbor, hoping to enjoy and photograph the beautiful fall colors.

Somewhat insensitive to my tour plans, Mother Nature, instead, treated me to an amazing snow storm.

Although the light was far from ideal for taking photos of the fall colors that morning, I found this view of the departing storm clouds, reflecting from the surface of Lac La Belle, to be spectacular.

• Even the local ice cream parlor in Calumet, Michigan, appears to be inundated with snow. I'd hate to be standing in front of those soda machines when those couple tons of snow decide to come down.

• St. Anne's Church was built in 1900 for the French Canadian Catholics living in what was an amazingly diverse population that had assembled in Calumet, Michigan, to participate in the copper mining industry. It is, in a word, magnificent. It is one of the multitude of churches in the Calumet and Laurium area. It was deconsecrated by the Catholic Church nearly 50 years ago, and for a long while, its future was in doubt. Thankfully, the building is now being provided the care it requires and deserves, and it lives on as the Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne's. This masterpiece of architectural heritage deserves a gallery all of its own (perhaps I'll pursue that in the near future).

• At Lac La Belle, it snows almost continuously from Thanksgiving until April. Because of its location, it almost really doesn't matter which way the wind is blowing, as the lake effect snow will still be there. The only exception was this winter, in which the completely frozen surface of Lake Superior eventually led to the cessation of most lake effect snow, as the water could no longer evaporate from the lake's surface. Just the same, this shot illustrates what happens if you neglect to run the snowblower for a couple of weeks in the Keweenaw.

• During the winter, white-tailed deer yard up in a densely forested area just east of the town of Eagle River. They're not the least bit shy when it comes to meandering right into the roadside park in town. This guy was not the least bit concerned about me and my truck, but was much more concerned with what was on the menu.
